‘On 21 December 1988 - A Pan Am jumbo jet with 258 passengers on board crashes on to the town of Lockerbie in Scotland - hundreds are feared dead.’

This headline probably singularly made Lockerbie a world heritage and pilgrimage destination. It is almost 10 years since Pan Am flight 103 exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie. All 259 passengers and crew were killed, as were 11 residents of Lockerbie. There are several memorials to this event, such as the stained glass windows in the Council Chambers. You can read the Book of Remembrance in the Memorial Room at Tundergarth. The Garden of Remembrance at the cemetery just outside of Lockerbie is another memorial to this tragic event.

The Lockerbie Town Hall, which was completed in 1880, is an imposing building with an impressive Clock Tower. You can learn about the rescue work done with neglected and abused animals when you visit the Mossburn Animal Centre. This centre also does therapeutic work involving animals and children and adults. See a working sawmill when you visit the Rammerscales Sawmill and see how the trees are transformed into different kinds of lumber.
